Developing Baseball Characteristics at OC Sports Performance

Baseball has rapidly evolved into a metrics-driven sport, transforming the way players are evaluated and recruited. The popular film Moneyball captured the shift from traditional baseball to today’s data-focused approach. At OC Sports Performance, we help athletes develop the essential metrics that baseball coaches and scouts look for, ensuring they maximize their athletic performance and stand out in a competitive field.

Key Metrics for Baseball Success

Metrics that matter for baseball players vary between pitchers and position players. Here’s a breakdown of the key metrics we develop:

For Pitchers

Pitchers are evaluated on traditional measurements like height and weight, as well as advanced metrics, including velocity and spin rate—factors that showcase power and control.

For Position Players

Position players are assessed not only on height and weight but also on speed and strength metrics, such as 60-yard sprint time, exit velocity, bat speed, and throwing velocity.

How OC Sports Performance Boosts Key Metrics

At OC Sports Performance, we track and develop essential metrics that translate directly to improved baseball performance:

Sprinting Metrics

We measure athletes on sprint times, including the flying 10-yard and flying 20-yard, to capture both acceleration and top-end speed. These metrics are particularly crucial for position players, but we’ve also seen significant improvements for pitchers who enhance their sprint performance.

Jump Metrics

Jumping ability is a key indicator of explosive power. We monitor standing broad jump, vertical jump, and various box jumps to build explosive strength that benefits both pitchers and position players. Improvements in these areas correlate with greater speed, agility, and overall athleticism.

How These Metrics Enhance Baseball Performance

At OC, we’ve had the privilege of working with numerous baseball players, from middle school to college athletes, and the results speak for themselves. Improvements in sprinting, jumping, and strength metrics lead to substantial gains in critical baseball measurements like throwing velocity, bat speed, and overall athletic endurance.

However, these improvements don’t come from “baseball-specific” workouts. Instead, our baseball players train alongside soccer, football, and track athletes because all sports benefit from enhanced speed, strength, and power. This multi-sport training environment builds well-rounded, highly capable athletes.

Building the Complete Athlete: Weight, Muscle, and Nutrition

Gaining Muscle Without Losing Speed

For baseball players needing to gain weight, our program tailors workouts to build muscle without sacrificing speed or agility. We’ve worked with multiple D1-bound pitchers who gained 10–20 pounds of muscle while reducing body fat percentage. The result? Increased muscle, improved power, and greater throwing velocity.

To monitor these gains accurately, we use InBody scans, which provide a detailed “before-and-after” comparison of body composition changes. This approach ensures that every gain supports athletic performance.

Nutrition Support

Our on-staff dietitian provides individualized nutrition coaching, developing personalized meal plans to support recovery, growth, and performance. With professional nutrition guidance, parents and athletes can feel confident that athletes are fueling properly, recovering fully, and making the most of their training..

Height Considerations

Although height remains a fixed factor, it doesn’t determine an athlete’s potential. College coaches often overlook height if an athlete demonstrates exceptional speed, power, and skill in running, jumping, and throwing. So, we focus on the areas that truly impact recruitment and performance, ensuring that every athlete can maximize their capabilities.

The Recruitment Advantage: How Metrics Impact College Opportunities

For high school athletes dreaming of college baseball, metrics now matter more than ever. College coaches face thousands of potential recruits and often start by filtering athletes based on specific performance measurements.

One college baseball coach explained that if a position player doesn’t meet a minimum 60-yard sprint time, exit velocity, or throwing velocity, they’re immediately removed from consideration. This means that developing top-tier physical characteristics isn’t just beneficial—it’s essential.
