Don’t Let In-Season Be a Setback

Don’t Let In-Season Be a Setback: How Skipping Training Costs You a Full Year of Progress

When athletes stop training during the season, they don’t just pause progress—they fall behind. Let’s break it down.

Most high school sports seasons last between 12–16 weeks. That’s 3–4 months of time where, if you’re not training 2–3 times a week, you’re not building strength, speed, or explosiveness. You’re simply trying to survive the season. And for most athletes, that’s not enough to get better.

Now here’s the kicker—if you take off one season per year over a four-year high school career, that adds up to an entire year of missed training. One. Whole. Year.

In Season training
In-Season = Maintain and Improve (Not Just Survive)

Too many athletes (and parents) think in-season is a time to stop strength and speed work. But the truth is, the season is when consistency matters most.

Without in-season training:

  • Strength decreases
  • Speed slows
  • Injury risk increases

That’s because you’re still competing, still sprinting, still making hard cuts—but without the support of strength and conditioning, your body starts breaking down. You lose the gains you worked so hard for in the off-season.

Training just 2–3x per week during your season is all it takes to maintain progress, avoid injuries, and keep building momentum. At OC Sports Performance, our in-season sessions are short, targeted, and designed to complement your sport—not compete with it.

Falling Behind Is Easier Than You Think

If your competition is training year-round and you’re not? You’re not just staying the same. You’re losing ground.

Let’s say you play soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, and run track in the spring. That’s three full seasons. If you skip training during even one of them each year, by senior year you’ve missed a full year of development. That’s:

  • A year of missed strength gains
  • A year of speed that could’ve been improved
  • A year of explosiveness left untapped

In competitive high school sports, a few tenths of a second or a few inches on a jump can be the difference between making the varsity team or riding the bench. College recruiters notice these details—and your competition is working for every edge.

The Athletes Making the Most Progress? They Train Year-Round.

The most successful athletes in our program at OC Sports Performance aren’t just the most talented. They’re the most consistent.

They train in-season.

They train off-season.

And they don’t make excuses.

They know that measured performance leads to improved performance. When you train year-round—even just twice a week during the season—you don’t lose time. You build on it.

Protect Your Progress—Don’t Take Seasons Off

At OC Sports Performance, we cap our athlete program at just 100 committed athletes. We’re not for everyone. We’re for those who show up, work hard, and want results that transfer to the field or court.

If you take the season off, you’re not guaranteed a spot back.

But if you’re ready to train smarter, stay strong all season, and keep moving forward—we’ve got you.
