Measured Performance

Measured Performance: The backbone of athletic progress.

At OC Sports Performance, everything we do is built around one principle: measured performance. From day one, we track and coach our athletes using clear, consistent metrics—because what gets measured, improves. And when that progress is tracked and reported, improvement accelerates.

What Really Matters in Athletic Performance?

Athletic performance varies by sport, but certain key performance indicators (KPIs) are universally valuable for youth and high school athletes. These metrics help us determine where an athlete is now and how to get them where they want to go.

Here are some of the most important ones we track:

  • Bench Press – A foundational test for upper body strength.
  • Standing Broad Jump – Measures horizontal power and explosiveness.
  • Standing Vertical Jump – Measures vertical explosiveness from a static position.
  • Box Squat or Back Squat – We prefer the box squat because it’s easier to learn, progresses quickly, and minimizes soreness or delays due to technique.
  • Sumo Deadlift or Low Handle Trap Bar Deadlift – A key measure of posterior chain strength. While we lean toward the sumo deadlift, we’ve seen great results with the trap bar as well.
  • Flying 10-Yard Sprint – Provides top speed data and calculates miles per hour.
  • Flying 20-Yard Sprint – A solid indicator of game-speed performance for field sports like football, lacrosse, and soccer.
  • 40-Yard Sprint (from a static start) – Tests acceleration—an essential element in almost every sport.
  • Standing Box Jump – While mobility can influence box jump scores, we use this as a marker of raw athleticism.
  • Hurdle Jumps & Bodyweight Verticals – We test several variations, and as scores improve, so does sprint speed and reactive power.

What is “Measured Performance”?

Within the first four hours of entering our program, every athlete is tested on multiple KPIs while receiving coaching on technique. This initial assessment gives us a baseline—and it gives athletes a tangible starting point to improve from.

From there, we retest regularly:

  • Sprint metrics are tested monthly.
  • Core lifts (squat, deadlift, bench) are tested every 3–4 months.
  • The rest of the metrics are rotated in every few weeks.

Athletes are expected to track their results, just like we do. This creates buy-in, builds accountability, and motivates effort.

Why Does Measured Performance Matter?

Measured performance is how athletes improve—because it shows if they’re improving. It removes the guesswork and builds confidence. There’s nothing more motivating than seeing the numbers go up.

We live by Pearson’s Law:

“When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported back, the rate of improvement accelerates.”

That’s not just a quote—it’s how we operate at OC Sports Performance.

Our athletes train 4–6 days per week, record their data, and stay focused on what they can control. When they do this consistently, they succeed. Period.

Of course, there are external factors—nutrition, sleep, hydration, stress, and competition schedules—that affect the speed of progress. But when you combine strong habits with a proven, measured training system, the results follow.
