THE SUMO DEADLIFT: WHY IT’S A GAME-CHANGER FOR ATHLETES

One of the most misunderstood lifts we use? The sumo deadlift.

We hear it all the time:
“Isn’t sumo deadlift cheating?”
“Does it even count?”

🚨 Reality check: The sumo deadlift is a superior strength-building tool for athletes. We aren’t training for lifting competitions—we’re building speed, strength, and lateral explosiveness.

Why We Use the Sumo Deadlift Over Conventional Deadlifts or Power Cleans
  • Less lower back strain = fewer injuries
  • More weight lifted = greater strength gains
  • Hips closer to the bar = better transfer to sprinting mechanics
  • Lateral force production = stronger change of direction & first-step quickness

It’s easier to learn, loads up faster, and delivers results more efficiently than many traditional lifts.

Bottom line? It works.


BOX SQUATS: BUILDING STRONGER, FASTER ATHLETES WITH LESS RISK

Some people love to argue about box squats. We don’t argue—we test, track, and prove.

At OC Sports Performance, we box squat athletes because it builds strength and explosiveness without excessive soreness or injury risk.

Here’s why we program box squats instead of traditional back squats:

Less eccentric strain = less soreness, more training days
Faster to learn
= more time spent getting stronger
Develops explosive power from a dead stop
= better acceleration

We use different box heights for different athletes to maximize performance:
➡️ Athletes under 6ft: 12” box + foam
➡️ Athletes over 6ft: 12” box + 2” plate + foam

Athletes who squat more without excessive soreness can train harder, more often, and see results faster.

Again—it works.


REAL RESULTS REQUIRE REAL TESTING—THAT’S WHY WE MEASURE EVERYTHING

A program that doesn’t measure progress is just a workout plan. That’s not what we do.

At OC Sports Performance, we track EVERYTHING:

Weekly & Monthly Testing:

  • Flying 10-Yard Sprint: Every 4 weeks, athletes test for top-end speed gains.
  • 40-Yard Dash: Every month, we measure full acceleration performance.

Quarterly Strength Retesting:

  • Every 3-4 months, we test key lifts to ensure strength gains translate to performance.

Vertical Jump Tracking:

  • Some say, “Jump mats can be gamed.”
  • But if an athlete jumps 24” in January and 34” in Aprilthat’s a 10” improvement, period.

We test the same way every time. The numbers don’t lie.


BROWER TIMING SYSTEM: LASER-ACCURATE SPRINT DATA

Speed is king.

And if you’re still timing sprints with a stopwatch, you’re doing it wrong.

We use the Brower Timing System, the same laser-timed system is used for every sprint.

  • No human error – No reaction-time delays.
  • Split-second accuracy – Gates at 10, 20, 30, and 40 yards.
  • True progress tracking – Athletes see exactly where they’re improving.

💡 If an athlete shaves 0.2 seconds off their 40-yard dash, that could be the difference between playing JV or Varsity, between sitting on the bench or getting recruited.

Every sprint is timed, recorded, and stored—so we can see the exact progression of every athlete.
