Middle School Sports Performance Training at OC Sports Performance: How We Build the Foundation

At OC Sports Performance, we don’t rush athletes through training just to make them tired. Instead, we build them the right way. For our middle school athletes—primarily 7th and 8th graders—that means a one-year foundational sports performance program designed to prepare them not just for today, but for long-term success in high school and beyond.

This phase of training is intentional, progressive, and coached every step of the way.

Why a One-Year Foundational Program Matters

Middle school is a critical window for athletic development. During this stage, athletes are growing rapidly, learning how their bodies move, and forming habits that will carry into high school sports. Because of that, our goal isn’t to specialize early—it’s to layer training intelligently.

We focus on:

  • Proper movement mechanics
  • Foundational strength development
  • Sprinting and coordination
  • Accountability and consistency
  • Learning how to track and own progress

By slowing things down early, we set athletes up to progress faster later.

Consistency Is the First Skill We Teach

One of the most important skills we build in middle school athletes isn’t speed or strength—it’s consistency.

In the foundational program, athletes train three days per week, typically Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This schedule is deliberate. It builds structure into their week while allowing for recovery, school demands, and sports practices.

Showing up consistently teaches athletes:

  • How to manage their time
  • How to commit to a process
  • How progress is earned, not rushed

By the time they reach high school, training multiple days per week feels normal—not overwhelming.

Why Wednesdays Matter: Sprinting & Measurable Speed Progress

Wednesday is a cornerstone of our middle school program. This is when athletes sprint and we measure speed development using objective data.

We track:

  • Flying 10-yard sprints
  • Flying 20-yard sprints
  • Standing-start 40-yard sprints

Speed matters in every sport, and learning how to sprint correctly early reduces injury risk while improving performance. More importantly, athletes see proof that what they’re doing works. Measured performance accelerates improvement.

Athletes Learn to Track Their Own Progress

Another major pillar of our middle school sports performance program is ownership.

Each athlete is given a training notebook where they track:

  • Strength numbers
  • Jump measurements
  • Sprint results

This teaches athletes how to reflect on progress, understand trends, and build confidence through evidence. When athletes can flip back and see how far they’ve come, belief grows—and belief matters.

This habit carries directly into our high school program, where accountability and self-awareness are essential.

Training Alongside High School & College Athletes

Middle school athletes train at the same time as our high school and college athletes. That environment matters. We have an 11,000 square foot facility that allows us to have everyone train together.

Being around older athletes allows younger athletes to:

  • Ask questions
  • Observe work ethic
  • See what consistency actually looks like
  • Understand what it takes to succeed at the next level

This exposure accelerates maturity, focus, and motivation in a way no lecture ever could.

Graduating to the High School Program

After completing the one-year foundational program, athletes “graduate” into our high school sports performance program.

At that stage, expectations increase:

  • Out of season: 4x per week
  • In season: 2–3x per week

Because the foundation has already been built, these athletes don’t struggle with the jump—they excel. They move better, train smarter, and handle higher training volumes safely.

We also emphasize injury prevention throughout the process. You can read more about how training protects athletes here:

Why This Approach Works

At OC Sports Performance, we believe that measured performance improves performance. When athletes are coached, tracked, and held to a standard, results follow.

We only accept 100 athletes because quality coaching matters. Spots are earned through commitment—and athletes who leave mid-season are not guaranteed a return.

If you’re a parent looking for a long-term development plan—or an athlete ready to train with purpose—this program is the place to start.
