The Role of Rest Days – Building Fast Athletes

The Role of Rest Days in Building Fast Athletes.

When it comes to speed, one truth often gets overlooked: tired athletes don’t run fast. Parents and athletes alike sometimes assume that “more work” equals “better results.” But when it comes to sprint performance, rest is not optional—it’s essential. At OC Sports Performance, we’ve seen firsthand how recovery directly impacts an athlete’s ability to run at top speed.

Why Rest Matters for Speed

Sprinting is one of the most demanding activities on the body. It taxes the nervous system, muscles, and energy systems in a way few other training methods do. That’s why you can’t expect athletes to sprint at their best without giving their body and mind time to recover.

One of the simplest observations we make with our athletes is this: those who get more sleep almost always run faster. While not a peer-reviewed study, our consistent experience shows a clear trend. When timing flying 20-yard sprints with the Brower Timing System, athletes who slept well the night before consistently ran closer to their personal bests—often within 92–95% of their top times. Those who showed up tired rarely performed at their peak.

How We Program Rest Into Sprint Training

At OC Sports Performance, we structure our speed training around recovery, not exhaustion. For example, we sprint once a week, timing flying 20s with full recovery between efforts. Each sprint is followed by five minutes of rest—long enough for the nervous system to reset so that the next sprint can truly be fast.

This approach goes against the old-school mentality of “running athletes into the ground.” Speed work isn’t about conditioning; it’s about quality. If athletes are fatigued, their sprint mechanics break down, their output decreases, and they reinforce slower patterns. In short, they train themselves to be slower.

By contrast, when athletes rest between sprints and limit max-speed training to once per week, they build speed the right way—by giving the body time to adapt and improve.

Rest Beyond the Gym

Rest doesn’t stop when athletes leave training. Sleep is one of the most powerful performance enhancers available, and it costs nothing. A full night of quality sleep improves reaction time, sprint mechanics, and recovery from tough practices or games. Parents should encourage their athletes to prioritize rest just as much as their training.

This means:

  • Avoiding late nights before practices, games, or races.
  • Creating routines that allow for consistent sleep schedules.
  • Understanding that more isn’t better—sometimes skipping “extra work” in favor of rest yields better performance.
Coaches and Parents: Don’t Overdo It

We often see athletes slowed down not by lack of effort, but by too much effort. Endless conditioning drills or back-to-back practices can leave athletes drained and unable to perform when it matters most. Coaches who want their players to be fast should prioritize speed sessions with full recovery and avoid overloading athletes during the week.

Parents can help by ensuring their athletes are fueled, hydrated, and most importantly—rested. A well-rested athlete not only performs better but is also less likely to suffer from overuse injuries and burnout.

Training Smarter, Not Harder

At the end of the day, the fastest athletes are not the ones who train the most; they’re the ones who train the smartest. By respecting rest days, programming sprints intelligently, and prioritizing sleep, athletes raise their performance ceiling and unlock their true speed potential.
