Strength gym in Bend, Oregon: Build Strength and Prevent Aging

At OC Gym, we specialize in coaching. Our mission is to guide you through proper techniques, helping you build strength while preventing the effects of aging. Here’s how we do it.
How Does Strength Training Work at OC Gym?
Our strength training program is structured into two lower-body days and two upper-body days each week. This proven format, refined over 12 years of success, ensures optimal recovery between sessions. It also allows us to incorporate Zone 2 conditioning to support fat loss—one of the most common goals among our members.
Common Strength Goals
When we meet with members during check-ins, strength goals often include:
- Improving bodyweight strength with pull-ups and push-ups.
- Increasing performance in traditional barbell movements like squats, bench presses, and deadlifts.
- Enhancing strength in other key lifts like the strict press and power clean.
To celebrate progress, we host an annual event called SuperMax, where members test their squat, bench press, deadlift, power clean, and press. This event not only tracks year-over-year improvements but also builds camaraderie and excitement.
Why Does Building Strength Matter?
Strength training is one of the best ways to combat aging. As we age, muscle mass naturally declines—a condition known as sarcopenia. Adults lose 3-8% of muscle mass per decade after age 30, but strength training can reverse this trend. Here’s how:
- Maintains Muscle Mass: Strength training stimulates muscle protein synthesis, helping you retain and even build muscle. This reduces the risk of frailty and promotes independence later in life.
- Increases Bone Density: Aging also weakens bones, increasing the risk of fractures. Strength training strengthens bones through remodeling, improving balance, coordination, and overall stability.
- Boosts Metabolism: It elevates your resting metabolic rate, allowing you to burn more calories even at rest. Additionally, it enhances insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and preventing age-related weight gain.
- Supports Heart Health: Strength training lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol profiles, and supports cardiovascular health, traditionally associated with aerobic exercise.
