Training Windows for Athletes: Unlock Explosive Progress

training windows for athletes

Every athlete dreams of those moments when everything just clicks—weights feel lighter, jumps are higher, and sprints are faster. At OC Sports Performance, we’ve seen firsthand that these breakthroughs often happen in short, powerful training windows for athletes. When athletes train consistently, these windows can lead to massive gains in strength, speed, and explosiveness. But if training isn’t happening—or progress isn’t tracked—those opportunities are lost.

What Are Training Windows for Athletes?

Training windows are short periods of time when athletes experience accelerated progress. These aren’t just random flukes—they’re part of natural physical development. The body hits certain phases where it adapts rapidly, and when the right training is applied, the results are dramatic.

For example:

  • One of our athletes, a now 6th grade girl, improved her standing vertical jump by 4.5 inches in just one summer—from 23″ to 27.7″.
  • Several high school boys dropped half a second off their 40-yard dash times within just two to three months (see how we train the 40-yard dash here).

These gains aren’t accidents. They’re the result of being in one of these growth windows and having consistent training paired with measurable tracking.

When Do These Windows Happen?

Every athlete is different, but we consistently see major progress during these age ranges:

  • Ages 10–12: Early development windows where coordination, speed, and power begin to rapidly improve.
  • Ages 15–17: A huge jump in strength and explosiveness when athletes are training consistently.
  • Ages 17–19: Another powerful window where gains in top-end speed and power peak.

It’s important to note: these windows are not strictly tied to puberty. We see 1–2 windows before and 1–2 after, which means athletes of all developmental stages benefit. But missing training during these times means missing out on potentially game-changing progress.

Why Year-Round Training Matters

The truth is simple: athletes who only train in the off-season leave progress on the table. Skipping training during the season doesn’t just pause development—it actually costs athletes long-term gains.

At OC Sports Performance, we’ve tracked and measured thousands of jumps, sprints, and lifts. The athletes who train year-round—2–3x per week in-season and 4–6x per week in the off-season—are the ones who consistently break through to new levels of performance.

Athletes who train sporadically, or who stop altogether during the season, not only miss their training windows for athletes but also risk falling behind their competition. That’s why sprint exposure every week matters (learn more about sprint training here).

Why Tracking Metrics Is Key

Without measuring progress, neither the athlete nor the coach knows when these windows are happening. At OC Sports Performance, we use tools like the Brower Timing System for sprints and regular vertical and broad jump testing. These numbers allow us to see progress in real time, adjust training intensity, and maximize every window of growth.

Athletes who can see their progress—jumping higher, running faster, lifting heavier—gain confidence and motivation to keep pushing forward. That momentum is what creates long-term success. Tracking also keeps athletes healthy by identifying weak spots before they turn into injuries (see our blog on injury prevention).

Don’t Miss Your Window

If you’re a parent or athlete, understand this: training windows don’t last forever. Consistency is what allows athletes to take advantage of them. Waiting for the “right time” to start training often means the opportunity passes by.

At OC Sports Performance, our goal is to help athletes reach the peak of their physical capabilities—not just for a season, but for their entire career. But that only happens when training is prioritized year-round.

👉 Spots in our program are limited. We only accept 100 athletes, and those who leave mid-season are not guaranteed their spot back. Don’t wait—your athlete’s training window could be opening right now.
