
Why the 400m Run and 500m Ski or Erg Matter. And why we actually track them
The 400m run and the 500m SkiErg or RowErg are uncomfortable on purpose. They are short. They are fast. And they expose a lot, very quickly.
You cannot fake these tests.
They are too long to sprint casually and too short to pace like a middle distance workout(2000m row/1 mile run). That middle ground is exactly why we use them. These efforts sit primarily in the anaerobic glycolysis energy system. That system is responsible for producing high power for hard efforts lasting roughly 30 seconds to about 2 minutes.
In plain terms, this is your ability to work hard when oxygen can’t keep up with demand.
That is why these tests feel the way they do. The burning legs. The heavy breathing. The sudden drop-off in pace if you go out too hard. All of that is anaerobic glycolysis doing its job—and eventually hitting its limits.
What These Tests Really Show Us
First, they show how well you can produce and sustain power while fatigue builds fast. Anyone can move quickly when fresh. These tests show what happens once the discomfort arrives and there’s nowhere to hide.
Second, they expose gaps in training.
If someone only does long, easy cardio, they struggle to generate enough power here.
If someone only lifts heavy and avoids conditioning, they struggle to hold output once fatigue hits.
Neither is a failure. It’s useful information.
Third, they reflect real demands in sport and life. Hard efforts rarely last just five seconds. They last long enough for fatigue to matter. The anaerobic glycolytic system is often the difference between holding on and falling apart.
Finally, these tests reveal mental resilience. The last 100 meters of a 400m run or the final pulls of a hard 500m require you to stay focused when your body is telling you to stop. That matters more than most people realize.

What If Running Isn’t the Right Tool?
Not everyone runs well, and that’s okay.
Previous injuries, joint issues, or inefficient mechanics can make the 400m run a poor testing option for some athletes. That does not mean they should skip anaerobic testing.
The 500m SkiErg or RowErg lets us stress the same anaerobic glycolytic system without the impact of running. The effort length is similar. The intensity is high. The physiological demand is nearly identical.
