Walking and Creativity: How Moving Your Feet Sparks New

When you’re stuck on a problem or trying to come up with a fresh idea, the best solution might be right outside your front door—literally. Walking has long been linked to enhanced creativity and improved cognitive function. At OC, we’re big believers in training for strength, health, and happiness, and sometimes that includes stepping away from the gym and heading out for a walk.

But why is walking so powerful for your brain?


The Science Behind Walking and Creative Thinking

Research from Stanford University found that walking can increase creative output by up to 60%. In the study, participants performed better on divergent thinking tests—a key measure of creativity—while walking compared to sitting. This wasn’t limited to walking outdoors either; even walking indoors on a treadmill sparked more original ideas.

What’s happening here? When you walk, especially at a comfortable pace, your brain enters a relaxed but alert state. The repetitive motion, the boost in circulation, and the shift in environment help calm mental chatter and stimulate new thought patterns. Leave your phone in your pocket or turn off the podcast. Give your mind space to wander.

2. Try a nature route.
Green spaces are especially good for reducing mental fatigue. Bend, Oregon, has no shortage of scenic walking trails—try the Deschutes River Trail, Shevlin Park Loop, or the Pilot Butte Trail.

3. Keep a small notebook or use voice memos.
Great ideas tend to come when you’re not forcing them. Be ready to jot things down or record thoughts.

4. Walk before creative work.
If you’re about to write, brainstorm, or plan—go for a 10-15 minute walk first. Use that movement to prime your brain for focus and flow.
