Why People Take Supplements — And When They Actually Make Sense

Caitlin Wells PharmD, Sports Pharmacist
At OC Gym Bend, supplements come up often.
Members are training consistently, working to get stronger, recover better, and support long-term health. Naturally, the question follows:
Should I be taking supplements—and if so, which ones actually matter?
At our gym, we don’t believe supplements are magic. We also don’t believe they’re useless. What we do believe is that supplements should support training, not replace it.
A helpful way to understand supplements is to break them down into three main reasons people take them—and how each applies to strength training, health, and longevity.
Supplements to Correct a Nutrient Deficiency
Correcting a deficiency is the most evidence-based reason to use supplements.
A deficiency means the body is missing something it needs to function properly. In those cases, supplementation is not about optimization—it’s about restoring normal physiology.
Common deficiencies seen in active adults include:
- Vitamin D, especially in people who work indoors or live in northern climates
- Iron, particularly in menstruating women and endurance athletes
- Vitamin B12, common in vegetarians, vegans, and older adults
- Magnesium, often low in people with high stress levels or heavy training loads
At OC Gym, we don’t rely on guesswork. We look at the full picture:
- Lab work when available
- Recovery and energy levels
- Training volume and intensity
- Nutrition and lifestyle habits
When a real gap exists, supplements help bring the body back to baseline, which supports better training outcomes and overall health.
Supplements That Support Strength and Performance When Food Alone Isn’t Enough
Many popular fitness supplements fall into this category.
These supplements are not about fixing a deficiency. They are used to achieve a physiologic effect that can be difficult to reach consistently through food alone.
Examples commonly relevant to our OC Gym population include:
- Creatine to support strength, power, muscle preservation, and brain health
- Protein supplements to help busy adults meet daily protein needs
- Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) for cardiovascular, joint, and brain health
- Caffeine to improve training quality, focus, and perceived effort
While these nutrients exist in food, challenges include:
- Needing large or impractical quantities
- Difficulty maintaining consistency
- Timing considerations around training
For busy professionals, parents, and adults training multiple days per week, supplements can be a practical tool to support strength training and recovery—when used intentionally.
Long-Term Health and Longevity Support
This is the most nuanced category and the one that requires the most context.
Here, supplements are often used to support systems that naturally decline with age, including:
- Muscle mass and strength
- Bone density
- Cardiovascular health
- Brain health
- Sleep quality and stress resilience
Examples often discussed include:
- Creatine to support muscle and cognitive health with aging
- Vitamin D for bone and immune support
- Magnesium for sleep quality and metabolic health
- Omega-3s for cardiovascular and inflammation support
It’s important to understand that supplements in this category do not replace:
- Strength training
- Adequate protein intake
- Quality sleep
- Stress management
- Daily movement
The benefits are typically modest on their own but meaningful when layered on top of consistent training and healthy habits.
Our Philosophy at OC Gym: Training First, Supplements Second
At OC Gym Bend, we train for:
- Strength
- Health
- Longevity
- Performance that lasts decades
That means supplements always come after the fundamentals:
- Progressive strength training
- Adequate protein and total calorie intake
- Quality sleep and recovery
- Stress management and daily movement
When those are in place, supplements can:
- Fill real nutrient gaps
- Support recovery
- Improve consistency
- Complement long-term health goals
Without that foundation, supplements are often just expensive distractions.
Final Thoughts on Supplements and Strength Training
Supplements aren’t shortcuts—and they aren’t pointless.
They are tools, and like any tool, they work best when used for the right reason, at the right time, and in the right dose.
At OC Gym, the goal isn’t to take more supplements.
The goal is to train well, recover well, and build strength and health that lasts—with supplements used intentionally when they truly add value.
