Working out isn’t selfish; it’s essential and an investment in you and everyone around you! As a wife and mom (going on 20+ years now) adopting the mindset that taking care of myself isn’t selfish has been incredibly difficult – I get it! We’ve all heard the inner voice whisper, “Oh I’ll just workout tomorrow,” or, “I’m too busy to exercise, it’s selfish.”
You’ll often hear us at OC saying, “You can’t pour from an empty cup”… In order for us (as partners, parents & professionals) to effectively take care of others, we must first take care of ourselves. This is intuitive in nature, but can be difficult to put into our everyday practice.
But here’s the truth: prioritizing your health and fitness isn’t selfish – it’s a powerful act of self-compassion that benefits you and everyone around you. Here’s why:
A Stronger, Healthier, Happier You:
- Improved Energy Levels: Working out boosts your energy levels. You’ll have more pep in your step to tackle your daily tasks, spend quality time with loved ones, and be a more present and engaged partner, parent, or friend.
- Enhanced Mood: Exercise is a natural mood booster. Regular physical activity helps combat stress and anxiety, making you more patient, understanding, and emotionally available for the people in your life.
- Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases: By prioritizing your health, you’re not just investing in yourself, but also reducing the potential burden on your loved ones who might otherwise need to care for you if chronic illnesses develop.
Leading by Example:
- Inspiring Others: Your dedication to fitness can be contagious! Friends and family may be inspired by your commitment, leading them to adopt healthier habits themselves. You can become a source of encouragement and support for their health journeys.
- Building a Healthier Family: When exercise becomes a family activity, it creates lasting memories and a healthy lifestyle for everyone. Kids who see their parents prioritize exercise are more likely to adopt healthy habits themselves.
- Promoting a Supportive Environment: By prioritizing your health, you’re more likely to create a supportive environment with friends & family where everyone feels comfortable prioritizing their well-being.
An Investment in You:
- Increased Productivity: Regular exercise improves focus, memory, and cognitive function. You’ll be sharper, more productive, and better equipped to tackle work challenges.
- Reduced Healthcare Costs: Investing in preventative care through nutrition & exercise saves money in the long run. Lowering your risk of chronic disease translates to fewer doctor visits and healthcare expenses.
- A Longer, Healthier Life: Taking care of your physical health increases your lifespan and improves your overall quality of life. This means more time to spend with loved ones, pursue passions, and create lasting memories.
Remember:
Working out & taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s essential. When you feel your best, physically and mentally, you’re better equipped to be a strong, supportive, and present person in the lives of the people who matter most to you. So ditch the guilt, by prioritizing your health, you’re not just making a positive change for yourself, but for everyone around you!
